The Surface Laptop Ultra RTX Spark is the first Surface laptop built around Nvidia’s chip, with up to 128 GB of unified memory and a promise to run models of up to 120 billion parameters locally. The official sheet landed in May on the Microsoft devices blog; this week VideoCardz detailed configurations ahead of a Surface event set for October 7.
What happened?
Brett Ostrum, corporate vice president of Surface, called the Laptop Ultra the most powerful Surface Laptop ever made, optimized for RTX Spark. The official sheet cites a Blackwell GPU with CUDA, up to 128 GB of unified memory, 1 petaflop of FP4 AI compute with sparsity and models of up to 120 billion parameters on the device. The 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra display reaches 2,000 nits peak HDR and 262 pixels per inch.
What is still reported, not confirmed on an open store page, comes from Windows Central and journalist Zac Bowden. There would be an 18-core Grace CPU with a 5,120-core GPU, in 24 or 32 GB, and a 20-core CPU with 6,144 GPU cores, in 32, 48, 64 or 128 GB. Nvidia publicly describes RTX Spark with up to 20 Grace cores, up to 6,144 Blackwell cores and up to 128 GB. Bowden pointed to pre-orders on October 7 and first shipments in mid-October. Official pricing is not out; Windows Central estimates the entry model well above $2,000.
Why it matters
Unified memory means the CPU and GPU share one RAM pool. On a large model, the bottleneck is often memory. A 120-billion-parameter model, even at 4-bit, takes tens of gigabytes for the weights alone. A 24 GB configuration, if confirmed, fits creation and gaming more than inference at that scale. VideoCardz notes about 60 GB would be needed for the weights at 4-bit, before context.
RTX Spark is the chip Nvidia showed at Computex 2026, built with MediaTek, for thin laptops and compact desktops. Putting it in a Surface moves Microsoft closer to local AI, where the model runs on the device.
What changes in practice?
- Agent and 3D work get native CUDA and up to 128 GB shared, if the top configuration is confirmed at pre-order.
- The 24 GB entry model should not be expected to hit the 120-billion-parameter claim.
- Price, ship date and the final port list still depend on the October 7 announcement.
Reports of USB-C, HDMI, an SD reader and Platinum and Nightfall colors remain expectations until the product page opens.
