FSR 4 reaches AMD handhelds and laptops by the end of 2026

FSR 4 will reach handhelds, gaming laptops and other APU devices by the end of 2026. The pledge came from Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager of AMD's computing and graphics group, speaking to press in South Korea, including The Elec. Digital Foundry and Wccftech reported the comments on October 8, 2026.

What happened?

Huynh said AMD will expand FSR 4's machine-learning upscaling — so far tied mainly to discrete graphics cards — across the product line, including APUs, gaming laptops and handhelds, before the year is out. An APU combines CPU and graphics on one chip, the silicon used in Ryzen-based handhelds, mini PCs and many thin laptops.

The plan has two tracks, according to Digital Foundry's account of the Korean coverage. Hardware already on the market gets a lightweight FSR 4 model built for the APU environment. Huynh said the team focused on image quality and low latency. A new generation of APUs, not named by AMD, would run FSR 4 more fully. Reading that as RDNA 4 graphics is The Elec's interpretation, not a named AMD confirmation.

Why it matters

FSR 4 is AMD's neural upscaler, reconstructing a frame from a lower internal resolution, in the same category as NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS. It launched with RDNA 4 on Radeon RX 9000 cards. In July 2026 it reached Radeon 7000 cards; official Radeon 6000 support is cited for next year, Digital Foundry reported.

Handhelds and laptops with integrated graphics are the devices that need upscaling most: the screen wants 800p or 1080p, battery limits power, and there is no high-end discrete GPU. Chips such as the Ryzen Z2 Extreme stayed on older analytical FSR 3 because full FSR 4 was designed around the machine-learning acceleration in RDNA 4. The light model aims for the middle: more stability than FSR 3, without the cost of the full network.

What changes in practice?

Owners of an AMD handheld or laptop do not need a new machine for the first step of FSR 4. The promise is software by December 31, 2026, not a patch with a calendar date. AMD did not list games, and it did not say whether the light model includes frame generation and ray reconstruction, features tied to the full package.

  • Current devices: a lightweight FSR 4 model tuned for APUs.
  • New APUs: closer to full FSR 4, with no official spec sheet.
  • Deadline: by the end of 2026, according to Huynh.
  • Radeon 6000: official support cited for 2027, on a separate track.
