Yamato √2199: Anno and Izubuchi direct a Production I.G and Khara film

The 52nd anniversary of Uchū Senkan Yamato brought the title and the team of the new feature. The official site for Yamato √2199 (read as Root 2199) opened on October 6, 2026, with a teaser visual and locked credits: Hideaki Anno and Yutaka Izubuchi share direction and design works. Animation is by Production I.G with Studio Khara, the first co-production between the two studios. Shin Office Academy is the producer.

Anno is also credited for planning and as executive producer. Planning is shared with Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, founder of Production I.G. The original work remains credited to Yoshinobu Nishizaki. The site does not list a release date.

What Anno wrote

On the site, Anno says this is not only about fulfilling a childhood dream: they want to keep making a Yamato that carries their hopes for the next generation and their own. He identifies himself as a fan since his second year of junior high.

The announcement closes a thread opened in October 2024. After the 50th-anniversary screening, Anno said Khara had licenses from Voyager Holdings and Tohokushinsha to produce new Yamato footage. Izubuchi, chief director of the Yamato 2199 reboot, was already attached. The new film is framed as another route, not a direct continuation of the 2012 series.

Why it matters

Yamato, which premiered on television in 1974, is one of the foundations of science-fiction anime for a broad audience. Anno built his career on Evangelion; Izubuchi redesigned the ship for the 2199 reboot. Pairing Khara and Production I.G on one feature is the new production fact: the two had not co-produced an anime before.

What is still unconfirmed is the calendar, the voice cast, and whether the film follows the 2199 line or reopens the 1974 story. The teaser shows the ship about to leave a devastated landscape, according to Japanese press coverage.
