The film Walpurgisnacht Rising reaches US theaters from January 16 to 19, 2027, in Japanese with English subtitles and in an English dub. Aniplex of America and Fathom Entertainment announced the window on October 8 at their New York Comic Con panel. Tickets go on sale December 11.
What happened?
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Walpurgisnacht: Rising- continues Rebellion (2013). In Japan the film opened on August 28, 2026, after years of delays since the original 2021 announcement. The US run is limited to four days and handled by Fathom. An exclusive US visual by artist Namie was released with the news.
The Rebellion team returns at SHAFT: Akiyuki Shimbo as chief director, Yukihiro Miyamoto directing, Gen Urobuchi (Nitroplus) on the script and aokiume on original designs, with Junichiro Taniguchi adapting them for animation. The earlier trilogy — Beginnings, Eternal and Rebellion — arrives on Crunchyroll on November 8, 2026 and on Netflix on January 2, 2027. Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese dubs of those three films reach Crunchyroll on November 15.
Why it matters
Rebellion earned more than 2 billion yen in Japan. Walpurgisnacht Rising is the series' return to theaters more than a decade later. Outside Japan, the film has been in local cinemas since August without a confirmed US date until now. Fathom's window is short: miss the four days and there is no other announced screening yet.
On October 15, 2026 a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray set of the three earlier films also ships, with Dolby Atmos audio and package art by Junichiro Taniguchi. The official trailer is at youtu.be/rSe4mqP1Mj0.
What changes in practice
In the US, tickets open December 11 on the Fathom site and at participating box offices, for January 16–19 shows, subtitled or dubbed. On streaming, the classic trilogy arrives before the new film: Crunchyroll in November, Netflix in early January. Fathom's release is at fathomentertainment.com; Anime News Network's report is at animenewsnetwork.com.
