Mafia III Definitive Edition now has native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. 2K and developer Hangar 13 announced the update on October 8, 2026, on the series anniversary, with 60 frames-per-second gameplay and a free upgrade for owners of the PS4 or Xbox One game.
What happened?
Current-generation versions are available on Sony and Microsoft storefronts. Anyone who owns the PS4 or Xbox One edition can update Mafia III Definitive Edition at no extra cost. PC also received a patch, with progression and stability fixes. Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III Definitive Edition remain included in the Mafia Trilogy and Mafia: The Omerta Collection.
According to notes published by 2K and carried by Gematsu, the game on PS5 and Xbox Series runs at 60 fps during gameplay. Many cinematics are rendered in real time and therefore also run at 60 fps. Some, however, are pre-rendered movies and stay at 30 fps.
Why it matters
Mafia III launched in 2016 and the Definitive Edition arrived in 2020, still on the previous generation. Players on PS5 or Xbox Series were running the older build through backward compatibility, generally capped at 30 fps. The native Mafia III Definitive Edition update lifts that cap in gameplay and fixes mission blockers reported for years.
2K frames the update as part of an ongoing effort to bring Mafia: The Omertà Collection to current platforms. Mafia II: Definitive Edition has not received the same native treatment in this wave, despite earlier rating speculation. That remains open.
What changes in practice?
- 60 fps gameplay on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Free upgrade from the PS4 and Xbox One versions.
- Corrected trophy and achievement tracking.
- Fixes for checkpoints, cutscenes and objectives in the campaign and DLC where players could get stuck.
- Lighting, texture and vegetation streaming fixes that caused visual artifacts.
- On PC, fixes in missions such as "Get Enzo Conti," "Kill Tommy Marcano" and the epilogue, plus crashes while driving into the Wharf or shooting gas canisters.
