Jagex pulls the Dragon Slayer 2 trailer after generative AI signs at RuneFest

Jagex took down the Dragon Slayer 2 quest trailer shown at RuneFest after players identified typical generative AI signs in the RuneScape 3 promotional piece. The official response came on October 5, 2026, in an Old School RuneScape Reddit post by developer Alec “Mod Sween” Sween, jointly with the RS3 team.

The case is separate from the RuneScape 4 MMO announcement at the same event. Here the subject is a marketing film for the Dragon Slayer II quest in RuneScape 3, drawn in an illustrated style. According to Eurogamer and PC Gamer, Reddit users pointed out a six-fingered hand and medieval boots with a sole resembling a sneaker.

What Jagex said

In the r/2007scape post, Sween wrote that the company was aware of the concerns, had taken the trailer down, and had opened an urgent investigation. Jagex says the video was produced by a trusted external partner who had explicitly confirmed that generative AI would not be used. “Among other things, there’s a sixth finger and, well, that’s pretty hard to explain away,” the statement says, followed by an apology.

The company’s stated position is that it does not use generative AI to create its games, artwork, or creative assets, and will not knowingly allow it to be used on its behalf. Sween also called the episode the second occurrence in quick succession involving partners. The earlier one, reported by GamesIndustry.biz, was an apparel collaboration with 100 Thieves in which AI designs drew a similar complaint.

What changes after RuneFest

Jagex says that, immediately after RuneFest, it will overhaul review processes and work with community creators so the story of Dragon Slayer II is told to the standard it considers fitting for the update. In a comment on the same thread, Sween said the post was made with the RuneScape 3 team and that the failure was not catching the problems in the external material.

What is confirmed is the removal of the trailer, the apology, and the public commitment to change partner review. What has not been detailed is the name of the studio or vendor behind the video, or the final result of the internal investigation. The company has not, so far, presented a replacement trailer.
