CXMT 4F² DRAM: announcement of server modules by end of 2026 pressures Samsung and SK hynix

CXMT 4F² DRAM has entered the memory market radar. Chinese manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies has announced plans to launch its first product with 4F² DRAM cell architecture by the end of 2026, aimed at servers. President Cao Kanyu presented the information at the Integrated Chips and Chiplets Conference in Shanghai on Saturday, according to Chinese and international media reports.

The 4F² cell occupies about two-thirds the area of the currently dominant 6F² cells at the same process node. This is achieved through vertical transistors (Vertical Surrounding Gate or similar), enabling higher bit density. The company claims more than 300 related patent families and demonstrated an 8 Gb research array in 2023 at IEDM. The first product will be a DDR5 RDIMM module for data centers.

Speeds, specific capacities, or details on yield and mass production have not yet been disclosed. Sources such as Bloomberg describe the claim as unsubstantiated on concrete technical points. Samsung and SK hynix are working on similar roadmaps, with mass production expected in later years (around 2028 in some reports).

Why does this matter?

High-density DRAM is critical for AI servers and data centers, where capacity and efficiency affect the cost of training and inference. If CXMT can commercialize the design with viable yields, it could accelerate Chinese competition in the server memory segment, currently dominated by Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron. The announcement has already impacted the market: Samsung and SK hynix shares fell significantly (around 7% or more in some reports), and the KOSPI declined.

CXMT has already expanded its share of global DRAM revenue (reaching about 9.5% in Q2 2026 according to TrendForce), and this step targets the high-value server market. The 4F² technology promises higher densities without necessarily shrinking the process node, which is relevant amid growing demand for memory in AI workloads.

What has not yet been confirmed

There is no independent confirmation of mass production, qualified customers, or final specifications. Launch depends on overcoming manufacturing challenges, hybrid bonding, and enterprise customer qualification. For now, it is a roadmap announced by the company itself.
