On October 6, 2026, Anthropic opened Claude Google Workspace in public beta for every paid Claude plan. The add-on puts the model in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides, and new connectors, also in beta, can create and edit those files from the chat itself.
The company described the launch in an official post the same day. Gemini already works natively in these apps; the change is the same kind of in-file work for people who use Claude, without switching tabs.
What the add-on does in the open file
Once the extension is installed, Claude reads the open document, spreadsheet or deck, sees the selected passage, cells or slides, and can change the file in place.
- In Docs, it can fix a sentence or restyle a heading without touching the surrounding formatting. Larger rewrites appear as suggestion cards in the sidebar.
- In Sheets, it can write formulas, build pivot tables and native charts, and add tabs. For joins or data cleaning, it can pull a range into Python and write the result back.
- In Slides, it can build slides from the deck’s layouts and themes and flag overlapping elements, items that run off the slide, or hard-to-read text.
The default mode is “Ask before edits”: each change becomes an approval card and enters the file only after confirmation. In “Accept all edits,” Claude applies changes without stopping. Anthropic has not published a date for leaving beta.
Connectors and enterprise controls
Starting in chat, a user can paste a Google file link or ask for a new Doc, Sheet or deck. On supported setups, the file opens beside the conversation. Access follows the Google account’s existing sharing permissions.
Signed in to a Claude account, the sidebar uses the same models, connectors and skills as chat. Anthropic cites a quarterly review deck that pulls account history from Salesforce and meeting notes through the Google Drive connector. On Enterprise plans, the company says controls such as the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK) and OpenTelemetry audit export also apply to the add-on.
Installation is through the Google Workspace Marketplace. In a file, the path is Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. Admins can deploy the add-on to a domain or to groups from the Google Admin console. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner or primary owner must enable the connectors first.
