ChatGPT age prediction received a public walkthrough on Wednesday. OpenAI explained how the chatbot estimates whether an account likely belongs to someone under 18 and, if so, automatically enables the ChatGPT for Teens experience. The help-center page was updated in the last few hours, and Gadgets 360 summarized how it works. Age prediction already existed; what changed is the public level of detail.
How the ChatGPT age estimate works
The ChatGPT age system does not replace the date of birth given when the account was created. OpenAI describes it as an extra check. The model looks at account and usage signals: general conversation topics, typical times of activity, how and when the account is used, patterns over time, and how long the account has existed. The company says prediction can flag an account for teen mode even when a date of birth was already provided.
If the account is eligible and estimated as under 18, ChatGPT turns on extra protections by itself. The account stays active. In earlier OpenAI materials, those protections reduce exposure to graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual or violent role play, self-harm content, and material that encourages extreme beauty standards or harmful dieting. Gadgets 360 summarizes that some features and interactions are limited, while study, creation, and questions remain available.
Where to look and how to appeal
The age category appears under Settings, Account, Age. There ChatGPT shows whether it treats the account as under 18 or as an adult. OpenAI acknowledges that adults can be misclassified as minors. When the option is available, verification goes through Persona, a third-party service. Depending on the country, it may ask for a live selfie, a government ID, or both, and check that the photo matches the document.
OpenAI says it does not receive the ID or selfie sent to Persona, only what is needed to set the experience, such as confirmation that the person is 18 or older. Persona would delete the file within seven days after verification, according to Gadgets 360's account of the company's documentation.
What is still open
ChatGPT age prediction began reaching the European Union on August 25, 2026, according to an update on OpenAI's official post. This round does not include a new Brazil-specific date. Sources: OpenAI Help Center, official age-prediction post, and Gadgets 360.
