Xbox Labs: Microsoft creates team to explore AI ports and new technologies

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced on October 13, 2026, the creation of Xbox Labs, a small group of game makers, engineers, and scientists tasked with turning emerging ideas into experiences for players and developers.

The announcement, published on Xbox Wire, highlights the recent rise of community projects that decompile and recompile games to run on hardware they were never designed for, including ports to Apple Silicon and browser execution via WebAssembly and WebGPU.

What is Xbox Labs

Led by Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet, Xbox Labs will build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating. The team formalizes ongoing work on compatibility, ports, and tools for modders.

Sharma noted that games share properties with software development, where AI agents are already widely used, and that players spend more than 72 billion hours a year on Xbox games.

Why it matters

The initiative comes at a time when AI tools accelerate game decompilation and portability. Xbox Labs aims to share the tools it develops with the industry, keeping the focus on making games more accessible.
