Xbox describes Project Helix as a family of devices, with a console and a portable option

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma again described Project Helix — the codename for the brand's next hardware generation — as a family of devices, not a single console. The latest account did not come from an official blog: Eurogamer and VGC published on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, passages attributed to an internal staff town hall, based on a transcript obtained by Windows Central.

According to those reports, Sharma said: "We are moving to a family of devices for Gen 10. There is not one device that fits all. We will certainly have a great console first, but we also know that many players will be on the go." She added that some things Microsoft is best in the world at manufacturing, and others it will partner on, with more detail as plans develop.

What was said and what is interpretation

The operating-system line is an attributed statement, not a product demo: "the operating system is starting to look really good, we're very excited about this." VGC reads that as a possible break from the Xbox Series X/S front end, itself close to Xbox One. That is an editorial reading, not a confirmed specification.

The mention of players on the go and of partnerships feeds the hypothesis of a portable in the Project Helix ecosystem, perhaps along the lines of the ROG Xbox Ally made with ASUS. Sharma did not name a handheld, a price, a date or a manufacturer. In August, on the BBC, she had already spoken of "a great next generation and a great family of devices for Helix." The town hall adds an explicit split between a main console and other devices, some of them through partners.

In June, Sharma said it would be hard to imagine a mass audience paying thousands of dollars for a console generation, and that the company was looking at different business models to make Helix more affordable. That earlier comment does not set a price.

Why it matters now

Xbox Series X/S already sits alongside Game Pass, PC play and partner handhelds. The October account pushes that logic into the tenth generation: a console remains at the center, but would not be the only piece. Until Microsoft publishes a specification, date or price, Project Helix remains a codename and a stated direction, not an announced product.
