X has started rolling out a rebuilt version of its web app, x.com, focused on speed over slow connections. The announcement was made on November 4, 2026 by Yagiz Nizipli, principal engineer on X's web team, in a post on the platform itself, linking to the X Engineering write-up, "Rebuilding the global town square from scratch". The Verge reported the change on November 5.
From more than 22 seconds to 2.7 seconds
According to Nizipli, on a slow connection the old X web app took more than 22 seconds to show the first post on a profile. With the new web app, that time drops to 2.7 seconds. The figures are the company's own measurements, not independent benchmarks.
The rewrite also simplifies the infrastructure: the three servers that served people, search crawlers and link previews have been replaced by a single one, according to X Engineering. The title of the engineering write-up — "Rebuilding the global town square from scratch" — signals the scale of the change.
How the migration is happening
The migration is happening gradually: the new web app already serves logged-out visitors and pages crawled by search engines, while signed-in users move to the new version country by country, which allows the change to be rolled back if something goes wrong. X has not announced a date for completing the migration.
Security researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who had early access to the new X web app, reported that the rollout starts in Indonesia and described the new X on the web as fast and polished.
X has also been expanding the platform beyond posts: the company launched X Money, its payments service, and Musk has announced that holding down the like button will send $1 via X Money — read more at Elon Musk announces holding the like button on X will send $1 via X Money.
