The Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering teams at Wizards of the Coast are asking Hasbro to recognize the expansion of the United Wizards of the Coast-CWA union and to stop pushing the adoption of language models and generative AI without the teams' agreement.
GamesIndustry.biz and IGN report that UWOTC-CWA, backed by the Communication Workers of America, now includes the D&D team and Team X, which works on Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters. The requested deadline for voluntary recognition is 5 p.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Wargamer says the request was made public on October 6.
What the union says
In the petition, the union writes that Wizards of the Coast leadership, without regard for the teams' wishes, pushed for the adoption of LLMs and generative AI. The text says this has to stop and that the teams deserve a robust, enforceable AI policy aligned with the group's goals and values. It also asks for ownership of what employees create outside work. According to the letter, if an employee makes something creative in their free time, with their own resources, Hasbro may claim ownership.
These formulations are the union's position, not an independent finding of how AI is being used in each product. The reports do not confirm that AI-generated art has entered a D&D book or a Magic card. What is documented is the demand for an internal policy and for union recognition.
What already happened with Arena
The original core was the Magic: The Gathering Arena team, which organized in April. Wizards of the Coast did not voluntarily recognize the union at that time. Workers later won the election, according to the UWOTC page cited by GamesIndustry.biz. If Hasbro again declines voluntary recognition, the path described in the press is to file with the National Labor Relations Board and win another election.
In May, the company had already written to employees that union representation could mean more, the same or less than they have now, and suggested that a voice is strongest when heard directly. As of this publication, there is no public response from Wizards of the Coast to the new October 13 deadline.
