Surface RTX Spark Dev Box opens preorder at $5,999, ships in November

Microsoft has opened preorders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a desktop mini PC aimed at people building local artificial intelligence. According to The Verge, the preorder price is $5,999 and shipping starts in November 2026. It launches alongside the Surface Laptop Ultra and runs on Nvidia’s Arm-based RTX Spark platform.

Geekiki already covered the Surface Laptop Ultra with RTX Spark. The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is the desktop pair of that same platform, now with a price and a shipping window.

What is inside

Microsoft’s official page describes the Dev Box as a machine with up to 1 petaflop of AI compute and 128 GB of unified memory. Unified memory means the CPU and GPU share the same RAM pool instead of each having its own. Microsoft says that lets developers train and fine-tune models on the desk, including models above 120 billion parameters, without sending the main workload to the cloud.

The chassis is 3D-printed anodized aluminum with about 1,000 air vents, a nod to 1,000 teraflops of performance. The body also acts as a heatsink. The thermal envelope is 100 watts, meant for long training runs. Ports listed by Microsoft include two USB-C, one USB-A, HDMI, Ethernet and a headphone jack.

Who it is for

The Dev Box is part of Project Zenith, Microsoft’s line of developer-ready devices. It ships with a developer-tuned Windows 11 Pro setup and preinstalled tools, including Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub CLI, GitHub Copilot, WSL, Python and Node. The pitch is to shorten the time between unboxing and writing code.

The Verge notes that 128 GB, Tensor cores and 100 watts could deliver an interesting gaming experience, but the official positioning is a development machine, not a living-room console. The $5,999 price reported by the outlet puts the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box next to compact workstations, far from a typical gaming PC.

Why it matters

The announcement lands on the same day as the Windows and Surface event in San Francisco, with Satya Nadella and Jensen Huang. The Laptop Ultra had already been shown as the first Surface with RTX Spark. The Dev Box is the desktop version: no screen and no battery, with the same focus on local agents and models. For a geek audience, the new facts are the price and the shipping window.
