The Starlink Mobile spectrum of 800 MHz was the focus of SpaceX’s October 8, 2026 announcement. The company agreed to buy the nationwide low-band portfolio from Grain Management to turn the service into a major US cell carrier.
What happened?
The deal covers up to 14 MHz paired in 817-824 and 862-869 MHz bands. This Starlink Mobile spectrum low-band penetrates walls better than pure satellites. SpaceX called it the “last critical piece” for full phone coverage. Still needs FCC approval. Reported value about $8 billion. FCC also approved 15,000 Gen2 satellites for 2 GHz.
Why is this important?
With Starlink Mobile spectrum the service becomes a direct competitor to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Hybrid satellite + terrestrial enables indoor/outdoor. Carrier stocks fell. Current devices already support the band.
What changes in practice?
If approved, Starlink Mobile spectrum will allow full cellular including inside buildings. Increases competition and enables satellite + mobile bundles. Rollout takes time for terrestrial network. Source: SpaceX announcement, Reuters, The Verge.
