Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on October 13, 2026 the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, a new color variant exclusive to the Japanese market. The black digital console arrives in stores on November 19, 2026 — the same day as the worldwide launch of GTA 6 — priced at 55,000 yen (approximately $350).
What happened?
The model, code CFI-2200B02S, is a version of the Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition (already limited to Japanese language and Japanese PSN accounts). It comes with the Midnight Black finish on the chassis and the included DualSense. Sony is also launching the Disc Drive Midnight Black (CFI-ZDD1J01) on the same day for 11,980 yen for those who want to add physical media.
Pre-orders start on October 20 at Japanese retailers and online stores. The console keeps the 825 GB SSD, 3D audio, PS4 compatibility and the rest of the Digital Edition specifications.
Why does this matter?
The PS5 Midnight Black is the first official black edition of the base console since launch (previously only replacement covers existed). The timing with GTA 6 is strategic for Japan, where hardware sales remain strong. Because it is region-locked (Japanese language mandatory and Japanese account required), it cannot be easily exported, which explains the lower price compared to global models.
What changes in practice?
- Japanese fans get an official black PS5 without needing covers.
- The rest of the world still depends on official or third-party Midnight Black covers.
- Anyone wanting a disc drive must buy the separate black drive.
- Direct connection to the GTA 6 hype in Japan.
