Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on October 13, 2026, the PS5 Midnight Black, the new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition color variation exclusive to Japan. The PS5 Midnight Black arrives on November 19 at a suggested price of ¥55,000 (about US$350), the same as the white Japanese version.
PS5 Midnight Black details
The CFI-2200B02S model of the PS5 Midnight Black is the Digital Edition (no built-in disc drive) with an all-black finish. Like other region-locked Japanese editions, the PS5 Midnight Black only works with a PlayStation account set to Japanese language and Japan region. Internal specs of the PS5 Midnight Black remain the same: 825 GB SSD, AMD processor, and 16 GB of memory.
On the same day, Sony launches the Disc Drive Midnight Black (model CFI-ZDD1J01) for ¥11,980, allowing physical games on the digital PS5 Midnight Black. Pre-orders for the PS5 Midnight Black begin October 20 at Japanese retailers and e-commerce sites.
Why is the PS5 Midnight Black Japan only?
The discounted Japanese version of the PS5 Midnight Black exists to expand the user base in the country, where the Nintendo Switch dominates. The region lock prevents easy importing. Sony has not yet confirmed a Western launch of the PS5 Midnight Black, although it already sells official black covers for the standard PS5.
