PS5 Midnight Black: Japan-only Digital Edition launches November 19 for 55,000 yen

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the launch of the PS5 Midnight Black, the new color variant of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition exclusive to the Japanese market.

The model, officially called “PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japanese Only”, arrives in stores on November 19, 2026. The suggested retail price is 55,000 yen (tax included). Pre-orders begin on October 20 at official PlayStation retailers and online stores in Japan.

What changes in the PS5 Midnight Black?

Like the previous Japanese Digital Edition launched in November 2025, this PS5 Midnight Black has the system language locked to Japanese. It only works with PlayStation Network accounts registered in Japan. Internal storage remains 825 GB of custom SSD. The console does not come with a disc drive — it is digital-only by default.

The big novelty is the Midnight Black color, a deep and elegant black. It matches other accessories in the Midnight Black line, such as the PlayStation Portal. On the same launch day, Sony also sells the Disc Drive Midnight Black for 11,980 yen. Those who prefer physical media can install the drive and play discs.

Context and the future of physical discs

In the same announcement, Sony reiterated its plan to end physical disc production for PlayStation games starting in January 2028. From that date, new titles will be sold only as digital versions. Discs of games released before 2028 remain playable normally.

The announcement appeared on the Japanese PlayStation Blog. Outlets such as Famitsu and Gematsu covered the news widely. The model is part of Sony’s strategy to offer more accessible options in the local market, maintaining the 55,000 yen price of the previous version. The PS5 turns five years old in November, and the new color arrives alongside major releases like GTA VI on the same day.
