Nintendo physical games Switch 2 remain a priority. While Sony announces the end of PlayStation discs starting in 2028, Nintendo has reinforced that it has no plans to abandon physical games on the Switch 2.
What Nintendo said about physical games
Bill van Zyll, vice president and general manager of Nintendo in Latin America, stated in an interview with Brazilian YouTuber Coelho no Japão that the company “has no plans to ditch physical.” He highlighted that Nintendo has historically been agnostic and follows what the consumer prefers.
“We’re barely just over a year into NS2. It’s got both digital and physical capability. There’s no plans to ditch physical. We know how much the fans like it as well,” said van Zyll.
Market context for physical games
The statement comes after Sony confirmed it will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. Microsoft has also reduced its focus on physical media. On the Switch 2, Nintendo maintains full cartridges and Game-Key Cards (which require a download).
The company continues to offer different prices between digital and physical versions in some markets, with digital cheaper for first-party titles in the US. Sources include The Verge, Eurogamer and Nintendo Life.
Why Nintendo physical games on Switch 2 matter
For collectors and fans of physical media, Nintendo’s stance offers a counterpoint to the industry’s move toward all-digital. Still, the company makes clear that the final decision on Nintendo physical games Switch 2 follows consumer preferences over time.
