Nara Koi CyberStep: historical otome heads to Steam and Switch

Nara Koi CyberStep is the next chapter of an otome that spread in Japan because it lets the player date historical figures. On October 8, 2026, developer CyberStep announced it had taken over the Japanese project and will produce it for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, keeping the scenario by original creator Aonimaru.

What happened?

According to Automaton West, CyberStep expressed interest, talked with Aonimaru and agreed to lead development. The notice went out on the game’s official account and on the creator’s profile, where he asked whether the studio was in its right mind. The working English title used by the press, Nara☆Koi: Even ancient people want to fall in love, is an unofficial translation of the Japanese name.

The original pitch made headlines in March 2026. The player becomes involved with figures such as Prince Shotoku and Otomo no Yakamochi. The heroine is a genderbent version of the 7th-century diplomat Ono no Imoko. The story is set in present-day Nara and depicts their school lives. Other characters were described as portrait-accurate, which helped the project circulate as a super ancient otome.

Production and scenario stayed with Aonimaru, illustrations with Bakkinu. The pair previously made free titles such as the comical RPG Phi Nara Fantasy and An RPG About Working Hard on Your Tax Return. Nara Koi CyberStep keeps that creative core, according to the notice reproduced by the press.

Why it matters

Nara Koi CyberStep is a rare case of an independent idea, born outside retail, absorbed by an established studio without a change of concept. CyberStep says the new game keeps the premise and the scenario written by Aonimaru. That preserves the tone that drew attention online while putting the project on Steam and Nintendo Switch.

For otome fans and players of Japanese niche games, the move shows that odd concepts can still reach a commercial release. It also puts Nara at the center of a school-life fantasy that mixes historical heritage and visual-novel romance.

What changes in practice?

There is still no date, price, route list or English confirmation. What Nara Koi CyberStep confirms is development for Switch and Steam, Aonimaru on the scenario, and a romance cast with Shotoku and Yakamochi. The Automaton West report reproduces the official posts from October 8.
