Modern Warfare 4 DMZ opens on October 20 for anyone who pre-orders

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ has an early-access date. In a post published on October 9 on the official Call of Duty blog, Infinity Ward confirmed that anyone who digitally pre-orders the Standard or Vault Edition can play the entire extraction mode from October 20, three days before the full launch.

What happened?

The Modern Warfare 4 DMZ calendar is this: campaign early access opens on Friday, October 16; DMZ on Tuesday, October 20; multiplayer and the full launch arrive on Friday, October 23. The benefit applies to digital pre-orders on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2.

Activision warns that the actual start time can vary by time zone, outages and platform availability, and that dates can change. The official store already lists campaign and DMZ early access on both editions.

Why it matters

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is back as an extraction mode after support for the Modern Warfare II version ended in late 2023. Infinity Ward describes the new version as the series' definitive extraction-shooter experience: persistent progression, open-world combat and the option to play alone or in a squad.

The map is the Hajin Exclusion Zone. The player deploys as an off-the-books asset to recover military technology left behind by the war, fights AI forces and other operators, loots, crafts gear and must extract with what they earned. The Forward Operating Base, or FOB, works as a command center, with stations for orders, stash, a 3D printer, operators and a boss board.

What changes in practice?

  • Digital pre-orders play the campaign from October 16 and all of Modern Warfare 4 DMZ from October 20.
  • Multiplayer is not part of early access: it waits for the October 23 launch.
  • The campaign is set during a full-scale invasion of the Korean Peninsula, with Captain Price back.
  • On day one, multiplayer brings 12 6v6 maps, Gunfight maps, Big War maps and Kill Block, a mode in which the training field changes between rounds.
