Ken Kutaragi AI: PlayStation father predicts AI-generated entertainment by 2029

Ken Kutaragi AI is the topic of a recent interview in which the PlayStation creator predicts that artificial intelligence will radically transform entertainment by the end of the decade. Kutaragi spoke to the Japanese publication 4Gamer about the future of games and technology.

What happened?

Ken Kutaragi, known as the father of PlayStation, gave an interview to 4Gamer published on October 9, 2026. He criticized the games industry for falling behind in technological innovation after his departure from Sony, arguing that advances in shading and NPC dialogue are modest compared to AI progress.

Kutaragi highlighted research into real-time AI video and music generation, predicting that around 2028 or 2029 this technology will reach the speed of current consoles. From there, communication, imagination, and personal interactions would become the entertainment content itself, and "it will no longer be called a game."

Why does this matter?

The statements come from a historical figure who led the 3D revolution with the original PlayStation. Kutaragi speculates that the entertainment market could grow from about 30 trillion yen (current games) to 3,000 trillion yen if AI enables real-time generation of personalized experiences.

This aligns with current trends in text-to-game tools and AI agents, but Kutaragi sees a bigger leap, where the process of imagining itself becomes the product. He currently works with AI and robotics companies, such as Ascent Robotics.

What changes in practice?

If the prediction holds, traditional development of levels, assets, and scripts could be complemented or replaced by dynamic generation based on user inputs. For the industry, this reinforces the need to adapt pipelines to generative AI, as some studios already do.

However, Kutaragi presents this as a personal vision, not a consolidated market forecast. The industry still faces challenges of quality, copyright, and public acceptance regarding AI-generated content.
