The film Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO opens in Japanese theaters on January 15, 2027. The date was confirmed on October 8 during a livestream tied to a New York Comic Con panel, alongside a new trailer and a visual centered on Shinn Asuka.
What happened?
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO is the prequel to the 2024 film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. It covers the gap between SEED DESTINY and FREEDOM, in Cosmic Era 74, after the collapse of Gilbert Durandal's Destiny Plan and as the international organization COMPASS is being prepared. North America gets screenings in February 2027; a wider international window has no date yet.
The returning cast includes Kenichi Suzumura (Shinn Asuka), Maaya Sakamoto (Lunamaria Hawke), Houko Kuwashima (Agnes Giebenrath), Daisuke Ono (Leonard Valway), Sōichirō Hoshi (Kira Yamato), Rie Tanaka (Lacus Clyne), Akira Ishida (Athrun Zala), Nanako Mori (Cagalli Yula Athha), Tomokazu Seki (Yzak Jule), Akira Sasanuma (Dearka Elthman), Kotono Mitsuishi (Murrue Ramius) and Takehito Koyasu (Mu La Flaga). Leonard Valway makes his animated debut after appearing in the bonus novel Moonlight Valkyrie.
Mitsuo Fukuda directs at SUNRISE, with production by Bandai Namco Filmworks and distribution by Shochiku. The screenplay is by Shigeru Morita, Chiaki Morosawa and Fukuda. Hisashi Hirai designs the characters and Toshihiko Sahashi composes the music. Fukuda has said the script was finished about 20 years ago, when the project was planned as an OVA, and that the oldest storyboards predate those of SEED FREEDOM. Dialogue recording is already complete.
Why it matters
SEED FREEDOM opened in January 2024 at the top of the Japanese box office and sold 634,182 tickets, about 1.066 billion yen, in its first three days — the franchise's highest three-day opening in Japan by revenue, according to Anime News Network. The prequel arrives in the series' 50th-anniversary cycle, with a stage at GUNDAM-Con2027, January 9–11 at Makuhari Messe. On January 10, Suzumura, Ono, Seki and Fukuda appear from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The second ticket lottery runs until October 12 at 11:59 p.m.
What changes in practice
In Japan, the first Muvi Ticket Card goes on sale October 16 for 1,900 yen, with a teaser-visual clear file. Cosmic Era fans finally get the theatrical bridge from Destiny to Freedom, with Shinn at the center. Outside Japan, the confirmed window so far is February 2027 in North America.
