The Get Jiro adaptation premiered this Sunday, October 4, 2026, on Adult Swim's Toonami block, with episodes arriving on HBO Max shortly afterward. The adult series is based on the 2012 Vertigo comic written by Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose, with art by Langdon Foss, and on the 2015 prequel Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi.
The story is set in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles where chefs hold power and food works as currency and a class marker. Jiro, a quiet sushi chef, enters a vengeance dispute against the factions that control this culinary economy. The HBO Max synopsis describes exactly that quest.
Who is behind it
Brian Tee voices Jiro. The voice cast also includes Alison Pill, Titus Welliver and Justin Kirk. The series is developed by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, with production from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. Sam Register, Jordan Blum, Gatewood and Tanaka are among the executive producers; Bourdain and Rose are credited as authors of the original work. The opening theme, Get Jiro!, is credited to Stuart Roslyn.
The first two episodes, Pilot (directed by Sam Liu) and Meat Is Murder, aired in the early hours of October 4 on Adult Swim. The Futon Critic schedule places the pilot at midnight and the second episode at 12:31 a.m. Eastern. Later episodes are set for Sundays: The Ortolan on October 11, Secret Sauce on the 18th, Pressure Cooker on the 25th and Tokyo Story on November 1.
Why it matters
Get Jiro is one of Vertigo's more unusual comics: a chef thriller written by one of the best-known names in food criticism, who died in 2018, years before this adaptation. The premiere puts DC Studios back into adult animation on Adult Swim, next to a catalog Brazilian viewers also find on HBO Max. In Brazil, Showmetech listed the series among HBO Max launches for October 4, with the first two episodes.
No audience figures have been released, and the sources checked do not confirm a Portuguese dub or subtitles on the day of the U.S. premiere. Series listings also vary on the date: some mark the premiere at midnight from October 3 into October 4, which in practice falls on the 4th.
