Gemini Agent Google: the new coworker with its own email in Workspace

What happened?

The Gemini Agent Google was announced by Google Cloud at the Gemini at Work 2026 event. This unified AI agent designed for businesses receives its own Workspace account, including email address, calendar, and presence in the company directory. The Gemini Agent Google can receive broad objectives instead of step-by-step instructions, plan the work, delegate to subagents, and execute tasks for hours or days, even with the laptop closed.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, highlighted that work now starts in the prompt window. The Gemini Agent integrates natively with Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Chat, and Calendar, and connects to Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, and data platforms like BigQuery and Snowflake. Users can choose the model, including Anthropic's Claude, and actions are logged in an audit trail under the agent's own identity.

Why does this matter?

The launch of Gemini Agent Google marks the transition from conversational assistants to autonomous agents that take ownership of outcomes. With over 1 billion monthly users on Gemini and adoption in nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies, Google prioritizes the enterprise environment to solve security, scale, and performance challenges before expanding to consumers. Early testers include On, Shopify, and PayPal.

The agent maintains multiple types of memory (session, semantic, procedural, and episodic) and can run persistently in the cloud. This reduces the need for constant supervision and enables automation of complex workflows such as scheduling meetings, generating reports, or coordinating teams.

What changes in practice?

Companies with Workspace Business or Enterprise plans will be able to create "coworker" agents that appear as colleagues in the directory, can be mentioned with @, added to chats, or receive emails. Flexible spending controls, intelligent model routing, and real-time cost caps help manage expenses. Broad availability is expected soon, with a consumer version in the future.

In practice, a manager can delegate the creation of a slide deck from an email, and the Gemini Agent Google researches context, gathers data, and delivers the result. This positions the Gemini Agent as a direct competitor to agents like OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse.
