Final Fantasy Resonance scores 36/40 on Famitsu and releases October 22

The RPG Final Fantasy Resonance, the first title in the series in the HD-2D style, received a 36/40 score from the Japanese magazine Famitsu. All four critics gave it 9/10, in a review published days before the global release scheduled for October 22, 2026.

What Famitsu highlighted

Reviewers praised the HD-2D visuals, which combine pixel art with 3D elements in the style of titles like Octopath Traveler, the turn-based combat with modern stun and Visions mechanics (summons of iconic series characters such as Cloud and Tidus), and the classic Final Fantasy essence with crystals, chocobos, and airships. The main story lasts about 20 to 30 hours, potentially reaching 70 hours with all additional content.

Final Fantasy Resonance adapts the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into a full console experience, developed by Square Enix in partnership with Lancarse. A demo covering Chapter 1 has been available since September, with save transfer to the full version.

Release and platforms

The game arrives on October 22, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam and Microsoft Store). It is the first Final Fantasy in HD-2D and returns to traditional turn-based combat, differentiating itself from more recent main series entries.

The Famitsu score is a good initial indicator, although international reviews have not yet been released. For fans of classic JRPGs and the HD-2D style, Final Fantasy Resonance promises a celebration of the series with modern production.
