DeepSeek Harness has stepped into the fight over extension standards for coding agents. On October 3, 2026, the Chinese company’s open framework shipped dsh-v0.2.1-alpha.1, with an experimental compatibility layer for Claude Code Mods, the extensions used by Anthropic’s agent.
What happened?
The public release is on DeepSeek’s GitHub. The next day, Tianyi Cui, Harness lead and author of the layer, explained its scope. According to coverage by UDN and the Chinese site Qudong, the layer is alpha and exists to check whether the extension API Claude Code offers plugin authors is, broadly, a subset of what Harness’s everything-is-a-plugin architecture already allows.
Cui was clear about the limit: not every Claude Code Mod can run without adaptation. If the team decides full compatibility is worth the work, he says it is technically possible later. Developer notes on X say Claude Code’s default security mod still does not run in Harness. That is a warning, not a footnote: the extension and the safeguard do not arrive together.
Why it matters
A harness is the frame around the agent: interface, tools, permissions and plugins. Claude Code and Codex are mature, closed engines. Harness takes another path: MIT-licensed open source, built so any interface or tool can be plugged in.
Whoever sets the extension API tends to become the standard others must match, as happened with VS Code extensions. DeepSeek does not claim to have won that race. Cui describes the step as a concrete test of the plugin system, not a ready-made copy of Claude Code.
The Agent Harness team was formed in March 2026. The developer preview, v0.1, opened on August 13 under MIT. Cui, a Zhejiang University computer science graduate who spent nine years at Jane Street, joined DeepSeek in March.
What changes in practice?
- Harness users can try mods built for Claude Code, with the failures expected from an alpha.
- There is no full compatibility, and the default security mod is still not runnable, according to developer notes.
- The framework stays open: the pitch is to plug in models and interfaces, not to lock users to one agent.
