ByteDance AI safety gained structural momentum with the announcement of an independent safety and alignment department within the Seed model laboratory. The unit, called Seed Model - Alignment & Preparedness, is led by Yan Lin, who previously oversaw alignment for the Doubao model, and reports directly to Wu Yonghui, head of Seed.
What the new ByteDance AI safety department will do
The main focus is to ensure that model behavior remains aligned with human intentions and safety constraints. This includes improving the safety capabilities of agent models and preventing frontier capability risks such as CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) threats.
Members of the previous Responsible AI team and part of the Chat team will be transferred. The department will formulate model specifications, safety evaluations, alignment training, protection systems, and risk monitoring. It also plans to expand cooperation with external researchers and independent evaluators.
Why it matters
This is the first standalone safety and alignment department created within a Chinese frontier AI model laboratory. The move structurally aligns ByteDance with labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic, where safety is treated at the same organizational level as model training. The action comes at a time of growing global attention to risks of AI agents and advanced capabilities.
