ByteDance and Tencent accelerate personal AI agents after Meta's Muse success

ByteDance and Tencent are accelerating the development of personal AI agents to capture the consumer market after the success of Meta Platforms' Muse.

What is happening?

According to a Caixin Global report from October 12, 2026, ByteDance intensified work on a personal agent it plans to integrate with the Doubao assistant. The project, codenamed "Spell", started in April and was initially led by the Doubao phone assistant team.

Tencent is also developing a standalone app called "Yuanbao Assistant", separate from the main Yuanbao platform, with dedicated permissions for long-cycle task execution and long-term personal memory.

Market context

The move comes after the launch and success of Meta's Muse, a personal AI agent that not only answers questions but executes tasks and helps with long-term goals. Muse runs on a secure VM and is being rolled out in the US.

Chinese companies are seeking to compete in the personal agents segment, integrating with ecosystems like Doubao (ByteDance) and WeChat/Yuanbao (Tencent).

Why it matters

The race for personal AI agents represents an evolution beyond traditional chatbots, with potential to transform how users interact with daily services. In the Chinese context, this integrates with already dominant superapps.
