Visual ads in ChatGPT are entering the image-generation flow later this month. OpenAI is limiting the test to the United States and an initial group of advertisers, according to the announcement reported by TechCrunch on October 5, 2026.
What changes on screen
Until now, ChatGPT ads appeared below text answers, with a name, logo and link in a block marked as sponsored. The new format places product and service images in the moment when a user asks for an image. The company says the sponsored material stays separate from the image the user creates, is clearly labeled and does not influence the model's answers.
The Verge, also citing the announcement, adds that these ads should not appear for Plus, Pro or Enterprise subscribers. OpenAI also says it has filters to avoid showing ads in emotionally vulnerable, sensitive or otherwise unsuitable conversations. The exact on-screen placement and how often users will see an ad have not been detailed.
Why it matters
OpenAI began testing advertising in early 2026 to support free and low-cost plans, and in August it expanded ads to India. The next step is to persuade brands to tell a product story with images, not only text. TechCrunch notes that, if the format leaves the US, the potential inventory is the base the company describes as 1.2 billion weekly users.
In practice, people generating mockups, product references or personal art on the free plan may see a sponsored visual while the image is being produced. That moves ChatGPT closer to an ad-supported media model and gives some users another reason to pay just to avoid advertising.
Measurement and brand suitability
Alongside the visual format, OpenAI is expanding measurement tools. The list cited by TechCrunch includes AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Branch, Singular, Kochava and other attribution solutions, plus funnel partners such as Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL. There are also geographic tests with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic, and brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.
None of this means an immediate global launch. What is confirmed is a US test later this month, with an initial set of advertisers, a visible label and a split between the ad and the generated image. Sources: TechCrunch and The Verge.
