What happened?
The AMD FSR 4.1 Xbox is coming soon to Series X and Series S consoles. AMD has officially announced the expansion of FSR Upscaling 4.1 to several new platforms, including Xbox Series X and Series S consoles (coming soon), Radeon RX 6000 Series GPUs, Ryzen AI Max and Ryzen AI 9 processors, as well as handhelds with Z2 Extreme and Z2A chips, such as the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally.
The announcement was made by Jack Huynh, AMD SVP, with confirmation from Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet. On PC, support is already available via Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 drivers for RX 6000 and Ryzen AI devices.
Why is this important?
FSR 4.1 is AMD's first machine learning-based upscaler (previously Project Redstone), offering significantly superior image quality over FSR 3.1 at similar frame rates. It includes upscaling, anti-aliasing, frame generation, and ray reconstruction, approaching feature parity with NVIDIA's DLSS.
For Xbox Series consoles, which have native INT8 hardware support, this could mean a visual quality leap without needing a new console, especially on Series S. It arrives shortly after Sony's QSSR on the base PS5, intensifying the upscaling competition.
What changes in practice?
RX 6000 owners can enable FSR 4.1 today with the latest drivers. On Ryzen AI handhelds and laptops, the optimized model ensures better performance on smaller screens. On Xbox, developers will have access "very soon," and Project Helix (next generation) will use the future FSR Diamond.
Games with FSR support can benefit from sharper images and higher frames. There is also Vulkan support and improvements to frame generation.
