Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has reached 1 million copies worldwide at the fastest pace in the 30-year franchise. Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe confirmed the figure on Friday, October 9, 2026, a week after the flight combat game's full launch.
What happened?
The official Bandai Namco Europe statement says Ace Combat 8, the first numbered entry in seven years, hit 1 million units worldwide faster than any other game in the franchise. Early access began on September 29. The worldwide launch was October 2, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.
The game is developed by Bandai Namco Aces, the team that inherited Project Aces. The campaign puts the player in the cockpit of a fighter pilot in a fictional world at war, flying real-world aircraft through rendered clouds and terrain. Multiplayer is the largest in the series, with cross-play and an air-base lobby for up to 100 players, including PvE and PvP modes.
Why it matters
Ace Combat marked its 30th anniversary in June 2025. The previous numbered game, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, shipped in 2019. One million copies at this pace suggests the gap did not cool the audience, and that Bandai Namco's global campaign reached people beyond longtime PlayStation 2 fans.
The publisher also says Ace Combat 8 is now the second-highest-rated game in the series on review aggregate sites, behind only Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies from 2001. The statement does not publish an exact score or name a specific aggregator. The sales milestone, by contrast, is an official Bandai Namco figure.
What changes in practice?
The game is already on sale. New players get the cinematic campaign and cross-play multiplayer without waiting for a specific console version to find matches. Bandai Namco did not break sales down by platform or disclose an average price. This statement also does not announce a Switch 2 version.
