What happened?
Microsoft announced that Xbox Insiders can now test purchasing Cloud Playtime without needing a Game Pass subscription. Cloud Playtime packs are available at introductory prices: 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99, and 50 hours for $11.99.
This preview allows players without an active Game Pass to try game streaming on supported devices before a broader rollout in November. The packs offer an ad-free experience with shorter queues and high-quality streaming, and purchased time remains available until used.
Why does this matter?
Xbox Cloud Gaming, previously tightly linked to Game Pass, gains a pay-as-you-go option with Cloud Playtime. This lowers the barrier for those who want to play in the cloud without a monthly commitment. Additionally, Microsoft continues testing a free mode with ads for Insiders, limited to one-hour sessions on already-owned games.
The move is part of a broader Xbox restructuring in 2026, seeking new access models after leadership changes.
What changes in practice?
Insiders can buy Cloud Playtime hours immediately and play without a subscription. The general launch is expected in November. Requires a cloud-compatible game (purchased or selected free-to-play) and supported device. Tester feedback will help refine the system.
