RGG Studio and Sega have released the first story trailer for STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, focusing on Act 1 set in Kokura, Fukuoka, in 1915. The video shows protagonist Makoto Daito's journey to Japan and the harsh realities awaiting him.
What happened?
The trailer, titled “Act 1: Kokura,” traces the events that lead Makoto Daito, a Japanese-American youth who faced persecution in the United States, to stow away on the ship of merchant Orpheus (played by Snoop Dogg). Upon arriving in Kokura, he encounters discrimination, suspicion, and the need to adapt to a society that initially rejects him.
The footage also introduces Yu Shinjo (Dean Fujioka) and the role of Heigo Yashima (Akio Otsuka) in guiding the newcomers. RGG Studio plans to release story trailers for each of the five eras and cities in the game, which spans from 1915 to 1965.
Why is this important?
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is a distant prequel to the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series, developed by the same team behind titles such as Yakuza 0 and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. The focus on show business, music, and the origins of the Tojo Clan adds new narrative layers to the franchise universe.
With a cast that includes Snoop Dogg, Ado, Tori Kelly, and prominent Japanese actors, the game combines action, exploration, and period entertainment elements. It launches on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), and Xbox Game Pass.
What changes in practice?
Players following the Yakuza series will gain a deeper view of the universe's roots, while new fans can enter a 50-year saga with combat, music, and moral choices. Sequential trailers help build anticipation and gradually introduce the different historical periods.
The game is already available for pre-order on multiple platforms, including physical and digital editions with bonus content.
