Sipeed has unveiled the MaixStation, a compact local AI computer powered by the Chinese Axera AX8860P chip. The company claims it outperforms the NVIDIA DGX Spark on Qwen 27B tests and should cost roughly half the price.
What is the MaixStation
The device pairs the AX8860P (256 TOPS native FP4 NPU, no sparsity) with up to 128 GB of LPDDR5X memory and 273 GB/s bandwidth. The compute module is rated around 40 W. Sipeed highlights support for frameworks such as vLLM, SGLang and PyTorch, plus clustering without expensive 400G switches.
According to Sipeed’s own claims (not yet independently verified), on Qwen 27B the MaixStation delivers about 25% faster prefill and 30% faster decode than the DGX Spark. Expected pricing is around $3,999 for the 128 GB version, according to reports.
Why it matters
Competition in local and edge AI hardware is heating up. The DGX Spark (and alternatives like the Ryzen AI Halo) raised the bar for unified memory and inference performance. Chinese solutions from Axera/Sipeed aim to deliver similar capability at lower cost and power, which could accelerate adoption of local models for developers and enthusiasts.
Samples are expected next month and full launch (including via Kickstarter) by the end of 2026, according to Sipeed. Sources: official Sipeed site and Tom’s Hardware coverage.
