TikTok Shopping Assistant arrives with Buy Direct in the Agentic Commerce package

TikTok's Shopping Assistant was announced on October 5, 2026 alongside the Buy Direct checkout, in a package the company calls Agentic Commerce. The conversational agent guides the purchase; Buy Direct tries to complete it in one click, without leaving the For You feed.

The announcement came at Advertising Week New York and on the company's own newsroom. The statement does not give an availability date by market. TechCrunch, which covered the event the same day, also did not record a launch calendar.

What the agent does

According to TikTok, Shopping Assistant understands the context of a conversation, remembers what a person needs and returns real-time guidance: product details, shipping, sizing, availability and the purchase itself, all in the same conversation. The company says the agent appears across several parts of the app, not only inside the TikTok Shop storefront.

Buy Direct is the other side of the same bet. Instead of sending the user to an external site, a purchase can be completed from a For You video. To support that, TikTok lists partnerships with commerce and payment platforms, including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe.

Why it matters

TikTok Shop was already the platform's internal sales path. What changes now is the framing: feed discovery and the transaction are treated as an agent journey, not only as a separate marketplace. David Kaufman, TikTok's global head of monetization product partnerships, described the direction as combining AI, automation and creativity to cut manual work for advertisers and speed up user action.

The same package includes other pieces. Agentic Leads is an agent for capturing and qualifying leads in direct messages and forms. The TikTok Ad Network reaches US advertisers to extend campaigns across a network the company describes as nearly 400,000 apps. The TikTok for Business MCP connector, based on the Model Context Protocol, is now available on platforms including Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity, Replit, Snowflake and Tencent WorkBuddy. TikTok says that, between July and September 2026, use of that MCP to activate and manage campaigns grew more than 200% among advertisers, according to internal data.

What is still unconfirmed

The statement does not detail which countries get Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct first, or whether Brazil is in the initial wave. There is also no public explanation of the language model used, how conversation data is handled, or how the agent avoids wrong size and stock recommendations. The relationship with the existing TikTok Shop is an expansion, not a confirmed replacement.
