OpenAI announced the arrival of its frontier GPT-6 Google Cloud models, including GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, to Google Cloud's Model Garden. The partnership allows enterprises to access cutting-edge technology directly in the infrastructure where they already work, expanding enterprise AI options.
What happened?
On October 21, 2026, OpenAI and Google Cloud confirmed the partnership for GPT-6 Google Cloud. GPT-6 Astra (for demanding coding, computer use, professional tasks and scientific research), GPT-6.1 Sol (near-Astra intelligence at lower cost) and GPT-6 Luna (fast, efficient model for everyday scale) are in private preview for select enterprise customers. General availability is planned in the coming weeks.
Customers will be able to purchase the models via Google Cloud Marketplace, drawing down existing GCP commitments. The models will also integrate with Google Antigravity and Gemini Agent for greater choice flexibility.
Why this matters
This is the first time OpenAI makes its models natively available across the three major US cloud providers: Microsoft Azure (primary partner), AWS and now Google Cloud. Google Cloud positions itself as the only hyperscale offering access to all three leading closed-source LLMs, plus over 200 other models.
For regulated industries, the combination brings Google's access controls, data governance and high-performance infrastructure, with Zero Data Retention options coming soon. Prompts and outputs stay within the customer's data perimeter and are not used to train models.
What changes in practice
Developers and companies can dynamically select the best model per task (performance, latency, cost) without architectural lock-in. Agentic workflows with Codex are also supported, connecting local CLI and Desktop to Google's Gemini platform.
Greg Brockman, OpenAI president and co-founder, highlighted that the partnership makes the most capable models and Codex available where customers already build. Thomas Kurian, Google Cloud CEO, emphasized broad model choice for optimal quality and lower costs.
Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner.
