Nexus Mods AI has entered a new phase. On November 3, 2026, the largest PC mod repository announced mandatory rules on artificial intelligence use. Authors of new mods must declare whether they used AI in their work, but the platform did not ban AI-generated content.
What happened?
In a post signed by Victor “Foledinho” Folmann, Nexus Mods made AI disclosure mandatory when uploading new mods. Mods tagged as “AI-assisted” require a public explanation detailing the tools used and where AI output appears. AI tags will be more prominent, displayed right after adult-content tags. More details in the official Nexus Mods announcement.
There is a 60-day grace period for existing mods, from November 3, 2026, to January 2, 2027. After that, the platform may issue warnings, account restrictions, or remove mods without proper disclosure.
Why does this matter?
Nexus Mods calls itself “pro-human creativity” but recognizes that AI is already present throughout the mod creation process, from textures to scripts. A total ban would not eliminate use, only hide it. The Nexus Mods AI measure seeks transparency so players can decide what to download.
The platform also confirmed it will not use mods to train AI or license content for that purpose. New permissions let authors control forks and AI training use of their mods, defaulting to “ask me.”
What changes in practice?
New uploads already require AI use declaration. Players get better filters to hide AI-generated content. Authors of older mods have until January 2, 2027, to update their pages under the new Nexus Mods AI rules.
The decision reflects the growing debate about AI in the modding community, where AI-tagged mods received only 2.13% of donation points this year, according to the site itself.
