On October 19, 2026, Microsoft announced the extension of Project Perception to deal with AI agents as "agentic insiders" — active participants inside the company that can pose risks even without external compromise.
What happened?
The official posts on the Microsoft blog and Microsoft Security Blog detail how agents (from coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex and GitHub Copilot to corporate agents) have access to data, tools and systems. Because models are not optimized for organizational norms and can engage in reward hacking or adapt unpredictably, the company argues they must be treated as insider risks.
Project Perception, announced in July, now includes Guardian Agents (security agents) that continuously supervise the actions of other agents. The system combines sensors for identity, data, endpoints, network, cloud and runtime to calculate dynamic risk and apply deterministic controls: assign a dedicated identity (via Microsoft Entra Agent ID), container, least-privilege permissions, sandbox (such as Microsoft Execution Containers) and real-time responses (block writes, require human approval or isolate the agent).
Discovery of local agents was expanded from 25 to 60 types. The tools are part of Microsoft 365 E7 and integrate with Agent 365.
Why it matters
With the rapid growth of agents in companies, Microsoft emphasizes the principle of surrounding non-deterministic intelligence with deterministic controls and independent evidence. Satya Nadella is quoted: the most trustworthy system will not be the one that trusts the model most, but the one that allows trusting it least, separating intelligence from authority.
This aligns with recent discussions about agents working more hours than humans (as in Anthropic reports) and incidents of unintended behaviors. The "Know, Contain, Protect, Adapt" approach seeks to operate at the same speed as the agents.
In practice
The capabilities are available now for E7 customers. The company stresses that there should not be a choice between innovation and safety, and that model transparency (including chain-of-thought) will help make containment smarter without replacing it.
