Kunlun Tech's Matrix-Game 4.0 runs on RTX 5090: open-source AI game system at 60 FPS

Chinese company Kunlun Tech, through its Skywork AI division, launched Matrix-Game 4.0 RTX 5090 on October 15, 2026. It is an open-source system that pairs a traditional game engine with real-time AI video rendering. The highlight is playable experiences at 480p and 60 FPS on a single NVIDIA RTX 5090, with latency under 150 milliseconds.

What happened?

Matrix-Game 4.0 separates duties: the game engine handles rules, physics, world state and player interactions, producing a simple low-poly view. A causal video model (based on Wan 2.2, roughly 5 billion parameters) turns that structure into detailed images in real time. Code, weights and assets were released on GitHub and Hugging Face the same day.

Initial scenes include Medieval Castle and Ancient Egypt (third-person shooters) and City Racing. A coding agent allows rule changes in natural language.

Why does this matter?

Earlier world models tried to generate everything (rules + visuals) inside one AI model, leading to inconsistencies and requiring data-center hardware. Matrix-Game 4.0 uses the harness paradigm: the engine ensures consistency while the AI only renders. Company data cites ~112 ms latency, far better than alternatives needing multiple professional GPUs.

What changes in practice?

Developers and enthusiasts with an RTX 5090 can try real-time game generation locally. The project is open-source (Apache-2.0), easing modifications and UGC. It is still early — limited to 480p and few scenarios — but shows a path for small teams to prototype interactive worlds with AI visuals.
