Jagex cancels RuneScape Reignited less than two weeks after announcement due to player feedback

Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited, a project announced at RuneFest that proposed a separate path of characters and economy for new and returning players. The decision came less than two weeks after the announcement, in response to the volume of negative community feedback.

What Reignited was

Reignited intended to create a “fresh start” experience with new characters, servers and their own economy, without paid progression or Treasure Hunter. The idea was to attract new and returning players without fully mixing them with veterans. Reignited accounts would have interaction restrictions with normal accounts in some content, such as bosses.

The announcement generated strong opposition. Veteran players feared community fragmentation, the devaluation of old characters and the need for a separate subscription. Jagex even apologized and considered heavy revisions, but opted for cancellation.

The decision and context

In the statement, associate creative director Mod Ryan (Ryan Philpott) said: “We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you… It is super important to us because the last time we didn’t listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that.” He referred to the 2012 Evolution of Combat, which contributed to the split between RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape.

The company stated that “it is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it. Our goal is to see RuneScape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community.”

What continues

The cancellation does not affect the 10-day free access period planned for December 2 to 12, 2026, nor other December updates such as the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey. The 2027 roadmap also remains on track.

Jagex maintained the invitation for new players to start or return in December, without the world split of Reignited.

Why it matters

The episode shows the weight of community feedback in long-running MMOs. Jagex chose to avoid the risk of repeating past mistakes that fragmented the player base, prioritizing the cohesion of the existing community over a growth proposal seen as divisive.
