Ghost in the Shell Science SARU: new anime project announced

Bandai Namco Filmworks and the official site announced this Friday (23) that a new anime project of Ghost in the Shell Science SARU based on Masamune Shirow's celebrated manga has entered production. The animation will again be produced by Science SARU, the studio behind the 2026 TV series.

Announcement details for Ghost in the Shell Science SARU

The project was revealed as a surprise via flyers distributed at the press preview of the OPEN HOUSE event at Dover Street Market Ginza in Tokyo. A teaser visual was also released, with the provisional title Ghost in the Shell (working title).

Science SARU is known for works such as Dandadan, Inu-Oh and The Heike Story, as well as the recent 10-episode adaptation of Ghost in the Shell that aired between July and September 2026 in Japan and on Prime Video. Details such as format (TV, film or other), release date and full staff have not yet been confirmed.

Franchise context of Ghost in the Shell

Shirow's original manga was serialized from 1989 to 1990. The franchise includes Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film, series such as Stand Alone Complex and live-action adaptations. The new Ghost in the Shell Science SARU production continues the cyberpunk legacy with the studio leading the animation.

Future updates will be shared on Bandai Namco Filmworks' official channels. Source: official site theghostintheshell.jp and Anime News Network.
