Gemini 4 Argon Minecraft: DeepMind agents defeat Ender Dragon in 27 hours

The Gemini 4 Argon Minecraft experiment showed that a team of four agents from Google DeepMind defeated the Ender Dragon in a fully autonomous manner, in a paper published in October 2026.

What happened in Gemini 4 Argon Minecraft

Researchers placed four general-purpose agents (the same ones used for coding) in a randomly generated survival world in Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.4, Easy difficulty, with no pre-scouted seeds. Each agent controlled a player via the open-source Mineflayer library and coordinated only through in-game chat and shared memory. No roles were assigned and no game code was written by humans in the Gemini 4 Argon Minecraft test.

In 27 hours and 14 minutes, the agents wrote and debugged 2,783 programs, exchanged 229 messages and died 605 times before defeating the dragon. According to the paper, it is the first known end-to-end autonomous completion of Minecraft by AI agents using only the standard library.

Why Gemini 4 Argon Minecraft matters

The experiment demonstrates long-horizon planning, multi-agent coordination and failure recovery in complex tasks. The authors relate the result to real software engineering challenges and enterprise tasks that require thousands of dependent steps.
