FLUX 3 Image Klein: Black Forest Labs releases 5.6B open model that runs on consumer GPUs

Black Forest Labs announced FLUX 3 Image Klein, a 5.6-billion-parameter open-weights model for image generation and editing. The release took place on October 15, 2026, and the model was optimized to run on consumer GPUs, including cards with only 8 GB of VRAM.

What happened?

FLUX 3 Image Klein supports text-to-image generation, editing with up to 10 reference images and bounding-box control. It offers native 4K output and pixel-perfect editing. The company released two variants: a base model for fine-tuning and LoRA training, and a 16-step distilled version for fast generation.

According to Black Forest Labs, in internal evaluations the model leads in quality among open weights, outperforming larger models such as the 9B FLUX.2 Klein and closed models like Ideogram V4.5. The FLUX Kommunity License allows free commercial use for individuals and companies with annual revenue under $5 million.

Why does this matter?

High-quality image models usually require expensive hardware or paid API access. Klein lowers that barrier by running locally on common graphics cards such as the RTX 3090 and above, and even on 8 GB VRAM configurations with the INT8 build. This opens the door for artists, indie developers and small teams to use frontier image generation without relying on the cloud.

Day-one availability in ComfyUI, Diffusers and other tools accelerates adoption. The ability to train LoRAs from the start also favors customization.

What changes in practice?

Anyone working with digital art, concept art or game prototyping can generate and edit high-resolution images locally, with precise layout control via bounding boxes. The distilled version enables fast generation, while the base model is suited for training. Larger companies need a separate commercial license or can use BFL’s API, priced from $0.009 per 1K image.

Weights are available on Hugging Face and initial support already includes ComfyUI. Black Forest Labs notes that the model should not be used without the prompt upsampler, which significantly improves results.
