Final Fantasy Resonance HD-2D: Series' First Game Launches October 22 with Famitsu 36/40

Square Enix launches Final Fantasy Resonance HD-2D on October 22, 2026, the first game in the series in HD-2D style, adapting the initial arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius for consoles and PC with classic turn-based combat and the Visions system.

What happened?

Developed in partnership with Lancarse, the game arrives simultaneously on Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam and Microsoft Store). A free demo covering Chapter 1 has been available since September, with save data transferable to the full version. More details on the official Square Enix site.

Japanese magazine Famitsu published the first review, scoring it 36/40 (9/9/9/9). Critics praised the HD-2D visuals, the strategic combat based on stagger and Resonance, and the classic Final Fantasy essence. The main story takes about 20 to 30 hours; full completion can reach 70 hours.

Why is this important?

Final Fantasy Resonance HD-2D marks a return to pure turn-based RPG in the main series after years of action-oriented combat. The Visions system lets players equip essences of iconic characters such as Cloud, Terra and Tidus, adding depth without gacha mechanics. There are no announced plans for Visions DLC or a sequel.

What changes in practice?

Switch 2 players will have a native version targeting 60 fps in handheld, while the original Switch version runs at 30 fps. The standard price is US$49.99. The soundtrack, with 120 tracks (33 new by Noriyasu Agematsu), will be released on October 28. Check recent Switch 2 news on Geekiki.
