OpenAI updated the ChatGPT Chrome extension, allowing the assistant to read the content of open tabs and, in Work mode, control the browser to perform tasks.
According to TechSpot and The Verge reports (based on OpenAI’s mid-October 2026 announcement), the ChatGPT Chrome extension now offers two main modes: Chat and Work. In Chat mode, ChatGPT can analyze open tabs to answer questions with page context (for example, comparing products across sites). In Work mode, it can send messages, download files, fill forms, and group tabs by topic.
Users can mention the browser with @Chrome directly in the ChatGPT app or website, or use the sidebar. The ChatGPT Chrome extension feature is available in Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi). Tab control in Work mode is limited to paid plans, according to available information.
Why it matters
The change turns the ChatGPT Chrome extension into a more capable browser agent, bringing ChatGPT closer to features similar to Gemini’s “auto browse.” Instead of requiring users to copy and paste information, the AI can work directly in the context of already-open tabs, with human review before final submissions.
Official ChatGPT documentation confirms support for tab mentions and browser control from the desktop app.
