Liquid Swords studio of Samson confirms closure after bankruptcy

The Swedish studio Liquid Swords, developer of the open-world action game Samson, confirmed its closure. Founder and CCO Christofer Sundberg announced the end of operations after the studio entered bankruptcy.

What happened

According to reports from Eurogamer, GamesIndustry.biz and Rock Paper Shotgun, Liquid Swords faced a liquidity crisis. Employees went unpaid for about two months and petitioned for bankruptcy. Swedish administrator Cirio published a preliminary bidding document for potential buyers, with assets including the intellectual property rights to Samson. Game sales reached about 151,900 copies and SEK 24.1 million (approximately US$ 2.4 million) by mid-October.

Sundberg, former co-founder of Avalanche Studios (Just Cause), founded Liquid Swords in 2020. In a LinkedIn statement, he said: “Liquid Swords is closing its doors. I’ve done everything I can to make this succeed and I’m very proud of what we achieved together.” He mentioned discussions to continue support for Samson and plans to create a new studio “built with the current market in mind.”

Why it matters

The case adds to a series of difficulties in the independent and mid-size games sector, with layoffs and closures reported at other studios recently. Samson had a mixed launch, with technical issues noted by players, and console versions performed better than the PC version. Future support for the game depends on ongoing negotiations.
