Epic Games Launcher vibe-coded: Preview with AI is faster than Steam

What happened?

The Epic Games Launcher vibe-coded arrived in Preview yesterday (October 14, 2026). Epic Games released the version rebuilt from the ground up and described by the company itself as "vibe-coded" with artificial intelligence help. In the official post, Epic joked: "Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that’s way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look."

The launcher is available for Windows, macOS, and for the first time, Linux. Epic claims the cold start time to the store is 5.47 seconds, compared to Steam’s 10.07 seconds — about 46% faster or 1.8x in the company’s comparison. The version is still light on features, described as a "speedboat and not a yacht," but already includes a shopping cart, redesigned library, dedicated game pages, and download monitoring.

Why is this important?

This is part of a broader shift at Epic. CEO Tim Sweeney recently announced a "huge pivot" toward AI-accelerated development, aiming to produce more and better, not just with fewer people. General manager Martin Keely confirmed the team used AI to write new code on a completely different architecture, not just to refactor the old one.

For PC players, a faster launcher with native Linux support is relevant, especially with plans to bring Fortnite to Linux later. Epic encourages feedback via a button in the app, as the Preview version still has bugs and missing features, such as some social options and account management.

What changes in practice?

Those who download the Preview from launcher.epicgames.com can test the new interface, connect libraries from other clients, and experience more agile navigation. The old launcher remains available. Epic has not given a date for the full stable version but plans to polish it based on user feedback.

This also signals how major studios are incorporating AI tools into supporting software development, not just games. Sources: Epic Games Store, interviews with Martin Keely in The Verge and PC Gamer, official posts on X.
