Valve developer publicly mentions “HLX” and reignites Half-Life 3 hopes

An apparently accidental slip by a Valve developer has reignited hopes among fans worldwide for a new game in the Half-Life franchise. During a panel at GameSoundCon 2026, composer and audio artist Mike Morasky publicly mentioned the codename “HLX” while discussing the implementation of HDR audio.

The panel slip

Morasky explained the company’s HDR system and said: “In fact, I think Deadlock has their own version of HDR. HLX has its own version, so on and so forth.” Colleague and sound designer David Feise reacted with a sarcastic “nice work,” and later joked that Morasky had only said HLX once.

The HLX codename has appeared in Valve engine code since at least 2024 and is widely associated with the next Half-Life project, possibly Half-Life 3. This was the first time a Valve employee has publicly referenced it.

Context and speculation

After the 2020 release of Half-Life: Alyx, Valve remained silent on new series entries. Observers such as Tyler McVicker point to increased development activity and claim the game is in advanced stages, though they do not expect an announcement in 2026. The accidental mention brought a fresh dose of hope to the community.

The episode reinforces that something related to Half-Life remains in active development at Valve, even if an official announcement is still distant.
