Cognizant creates OpenAI Frontier Capability Group with 25,000 staff

Cognizant announced on October 30, 2026 the creation of the OpenAI Frontier Capability Group, a global delivery organization bringing together more than 25,000 professionals dedicated to delivering OpenAI products such as Codex and ChatGPT to enterprise clients. Its stated goal is to help companies apply AI models to how they write software, serve customers and run day-to-day operations.

According to the company, the bottleneck for many organizations is no longer access to frontier models, but the lack of professionals who know how to build with those models inside the systems the business depends on. To support that bet, Cognizant says more than 21,000 associates have earned more than 40,000 OpenAI badges, awarded after learning tracks on the company's technologies.

The group will start with three focus areas: AI-native software engineering with Codex; application modernization, including migrating legacy mainframe code to cloud-native code with Cognizant Application Modernizer; and agentic customer operations, applied to sales, service and support. The company says engineers review consequential decisions and cites experience modernizing mainframes for more than 500 clients.

The strategy also involves testing first inside its own business: Cognizant's own sales and customer-success teams already use a solution built on OpenAI models to find and pursue new opportunities. As a client example, the company cites an enterprise assistant co-engineered with a global biopharmaceutical company, which has handled more than 5 million conversations and cut content-creation time by 60%.

Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar S said that, with Codex and ChatGPT, OpenAI is changing both who builds systems and how they are built — and that the commitment is to bring that change inside clients' businesses. OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Dali Rajic said the partnership helps more companies turn AI into real business impact.

Cognizant also says it is one of a select group of Advanced partners in the OpenAI Partner Network, and that its Codex hackathons in India and the Americas brought together more than 12,000 participants. The OpenAI Frontier Capability Group announcement is a clear sign that competition among large service providers is now less about access to the model and more about the ability to put AI into production, with trained teams, governance and delivery scale.
